Description

The SIG P226-XFIVE LEGION Direct is a competition-ready pistol built for shooters who want a serious edge in USPSA or Steel Challenge. This isn’t a dressed-up carry gun—it’s a purpose-built tool with a 5-inch bull barrel and a frame designed from the ground up for speed and control. After decades of testing competition pistols, I can tell you the weight and balance of this one are immediately noticeable.

Key Features

  • 5″ Bull Barrel & Slide: The extended, heavy-profile barrel provides a longer sight radius and reduces muzzle flip. I’ve run thousands of rounds through similar setups, and the difference in split times is real.
  • Legion Gray PVD Finish & TXG Grip Module: The tungsten-infused polymer grip adds significant weight low in the frame for stability, while the PVD finish is one of the most durable I’ve seen in my shop.
  • Optics-Ready & Suppressor Sights: Comes cut for a ROMEO1PRO footprint and includes tall co-witness sights, so you can mount a dot without sending the slide out.
  • Enhanced Trigger & Controls: Features a flat-faced, skeletonized trigger with a short reset and an extended magazine release for faster, more intuitive manipulation.

Honest Assessment

Pros: The weight distribution is exceptional for managing recoil, making fast, accurate follow-up shots easier. The out-of-the-box trigger is excellent for a production gun, and the optics-ready system is genuinely useful. The fit and finish are what you expect from the Legion series.

Cons: At nearly three pounds unloaded, this is a heavy pistol. It’s not meant for carry. The price point puts it squarely in the premium category, and the proprietary optics footprint means you’re mostly locked into SIG’s ROMEO1PRO unless you use an adapter plate.

Who Should Buy This

This pistol is for the competitive shooter focused on USPSA Production or Carry Optics divisions, or for the dedicated home defense user who wants a soft-shooting, high-capacity pistol that will live on a nightstand. It’s also a great choice for someone who wants a single, high-end “do everything but carry” 9mm for the range. If you’re looking for a lightweight or concealed-carry firearm, this isn’t it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this the same as the standard P226 Legion?

No. The XFIVE model has a longer 5-inch bull barrel and slide, a different frame with a heavier TXG grip module, and is specifically configured for competition use. The standard Legion has a 4.4-inch barrel and is more of an all-purpose pistol.

What optics fit the slide cut?

It comes cut from the factory for the SIG SAUER ROMEO1PRO footprint. For other popular dots like the Trijicon RMR, you will need to purchase and install a separate adapter plate, which are available from SIG and third-party manufacturers.

How does the trigger compare to a custom 1911?

It’s very good for a striker-fired, production pistol—crisp with a short, positive reset. I’ve seen firsthand that it holds its own. However, a well-tuned 1911 or 2011 trigger will still have a lighter, crisper break. For the price, you’re getting one of the best factory triggers available.

Better than what I got from a local shop last time.
