Description

The Beretta M9A4 Overlanding Clay is a purpose-built 9mm for serious outdoor use, blending the M9’s legendary reliability with modern features that handle harsh conditions. If you need a sidearm that works when covered in mud, dust, or rain, this is the factory configuration to get.

Key Features

  • Cerakote “Clay” Finish: More than just a color. This Cerakote application provides serious corrosion resistance against moisture and sweat, which I’ve seen firsthand hold up better than standard Bruniton on long treks.
  • Threaded 5.1″ Barrel: Comes ready for a suppressor or compensator. The threads are cleanly cut and protected by an included thread protector.
  • Optic-Ready Slide: The slide is cut from the factory for a Trijicon RMR footprint optic, a huge upgrade over trying to mill an older model in my shop.
  • Vertec-Style Frame: This gives you a slimmer, more modern grip with aggressive texturing. It comes with three different backstrap inserts to fine-tune the fit.
  • Enhanced Controls: Features an extended magazine release and a low-profile, reversible decocker/safety for smoother operation with gloves on.

Honest Assessment

Pros: The build quality is excellent. The optic cut is precise, the trigger is a solid improvement over older M9s, and after decades of testing Berettas, I trust this action to run. The inclusion of three 18-round mags and the suppressor-height sights out of the box adds real value. The Cerakote finish is tough and perfectly suited to the “overlanding” name.

Cons: It’s not a light pistol at over 33 ounces unloaded. If you’re counting every ounce in a pack, you’ll feel it. Also, while the Vertec grip is better for most, shooters with very large hands might still find it a bit slim compared to the classic M92 grip. The decocker/safety, while low-profile, is still a feature some modern shooters don’t want.

Who Should Buy This

This is for the shooter who uses their gear hard. Buy this if you’re a backpacker, hunter, or overlander who needs a reliable, accurate 9mm that can be run suppressed and isn’t afraid of the elements. It’s also a fantastic choice for a home defense pistol you plan to mount an optic and light on, thanks to its rail and ready-to-go slide.

Frequently Asked Questions

What optics fit the M9A4 slide cut?

The slide is cut for the Trijicon RMR footprint. This means optics like the Trijicon RMR/SRO, Holosun 507C/508T, and other models using that same mounting pattern will fit directly with the included plates.

Is the finish durable?

Yes. The Cerakote “Clay” finish is significantly more abrasion and corrosion resistant than the standard blued or Bruniton finishes on older models. I’ve run thousands of rounds through Cerakoted guns and it holds up well to holster wear and field use.

Can I use my old M9 or 92FS magazines?

Absolutely. The M9A4 is compatible with all standard Beretta 92/M9 magazines, including your older 15-rounders. The three included 18-round mags are just a bonus.

How does the Vertec grip compare to the original?

It’s slimmer front-to-back with a straighter backstrap. This puts your hand higher on the frame for better recoil control and typically gives a more modern, neutral trigger reach. The changeable backstraps let you adjust it to be almost perfect for most hand sizes.

Packaging was a bit banged up when it arrived but the product inside was fine. Would’ve liked better packing.

I’ve been shooting for 10 years and I’m picky about where I buy accessories online. Houston Sporting Goods earned my business. The Beretta M9A4 Overlanding Clay 9mm 5.1″ Threaded arrived in 3 days, packaged well, and fit my G17 Gen4 without any modification. I put 115 rounds through it that same weekend and had zero issues. The finish quality is better than I expected at this price point. I’ll be back for more.

Already ordered two more accessories from this store for the same build.
